Best practices in the management and standardization of fungal culture collections of clinical relevance will be addressed, integrating both practical and conceptual approaches.
The program is designed to provide participants with hands-on experience alongside an updated theoretical framework covering key aspects of fungal collections, including isolation and identification, preservation strategies (from cryopreservation to lyophilization), database management (organization and registration of collection data), and biosecurity and regulatory compliance aligned with international standards.
The preservation of clinically relevant fungal strains is fundamental to the advancement of Clinical Mycology. This activity provides a comprehensive perspective on the role of these biological resources in supporting global health, encompassing the following topics:
Data management and sharing: databases, repository services, and lineage tracking;
Innovation hub: how well-characterized strains drive the development of diagnostic, pathogenicity studies and pharmaceutical biotechnology;
Analytical accuracy: the role of reference materials in equipment calibration and validation of global diagnostic kits and others;
DNA research: exploring how genetic libraries enable epidemiological studies, including surveillance studies such as tracing the origins of outbreaks and/or lineages.
Taxonomic updates: master the importance of type strains and reference strains for phylogenetic studies and species classification.
